Forget what you know about karate.

This is new. This is wellness karate.

Nami-do is a complete physical and psychosocial health, wellness, functional skillset program focused on building a purpose-filled life. It is comprehensive and integrated personal development.

No uniforms. No heirarchy or belts.

Why this is different.

·     Nami is an absolutely new idea. It uses the best parts of old-school karate. It also draws the budo culture, the meditation and cultivation of Zen. Yet everything else is modern. The classes are learning practical self-defense not trophy chasing YET they are not aggressive. They use the training to improve in mind, body and spirit. The application is not dangerous but is great for couples to learn together.

It was designed for adults (not kiddie karate or Cobra Kai).

·       People are returning to disciplines and rooting in proven approaches. We apply some concepts of the book “Living the Martial Way”. One activity: physical, mental, emotional, spiritual and social activity (see the graphic on the benefits of living the martial way below).

·       It is one activity with flexibility, speed, stamina, agility, explosiveness, fat burning, tone and muscle endurance. It is the fountain of youth.

·       It teaches meditation, Zen, stillness and the eradication of fear.

·       It provides an artistic expression to evolve and refine. Something to always improve.

·       It helps you lived a more centered life.

·       It helps you quiet the noise and opened up aliveness.

·       It teaches you how to be safer and a better protector not just face to face but mass event.

·       It gave you a path to socialize with a larger global community of karateka within the local area and most continents within our federation.

·       It is Japanese/Budo culture. Trace your lineage to Okinawa. You would be five steps from the founder of Japanese karate.

What You’ll Learn

Physical Training

The root of our training is karate, as it is almost a singular perfect form of exercise. We add athletic drills and conditioning using modern approaches. The idea is to optimize your speed, agility, power, conditioning, balance, explosiveness and coordination. It is karate when karate was cool. We offer optional weight-loss for free as part of being a student. We train kickboxing as well.

The best part, unlike other forms of training, you learn something that you own for the rest of your life. It is a way to train that can lead you to the fountain of youth. People in their 60s and 70s are chronologically in their 40s.

Mental focus and Emotional Regulation

We are incomplete without the mental training. It is what will change your life.

During our classes, the training will challenge you. You will learn about yourself through this. You will have the opportunity to cultivate a martial way of living which can perservere and remain calm in the face of adversity. In this, we teach Zen concepts and modern psychology to repackage fears and find stillness.

The Warrior Way

To train our way, you would benefit from a mindset. Strong karate training cultivates a martial or “warrior way”. It is the nature of budo under Japanese militaristic need which fosters this. We do not seek the war against others because the battle in life is against yourself. Ask AI “can the warrior way be used to help people in life?”

The “warrior way” is a natural reaction to good martial arts training. It will benefit all aspects of your life.

Additional Impact

Nami Karate-Do is part of Kokoro and Kokoro is a complete health, wellness and lifestyle management practice.

We believe this combination of elements is extremely rare. Having just one option (a coach, a karate sensei, a personal trainer or lifestyle medicine instructor) is powerful. Having access to all of them is life altering. There is no limit and you would have a transformational experience.

This is the Kokoro life.

Instructor: Ken Silva

Teacher and Coach

Ken Silva, Wellness Karate Instructor

Ken has studied karate since 1980 and is a blackbelt in Shotokan karate. He studied in the North American Karate Federation ran by Kazumi Tabata in the 1960s.

Ken stripped out the hierarchy, sport style fighting and has made the teaching style like yoga. He wants karate to be a world class wellness practice that rivals and, in some cases, can exceed the completeness of yoga by fulfilling the conditioning and dynamic capabilities people need to function in fluid situations.

He has taken the best parts of old school karate, integrated his knowledge of personal training, health, wellness and lifestyle management training and has blended it with yoga sensibilities as he removed the militant hierarchy inherent in belt systems.

The name “nami” in Japanese means wave or returning. This implies that this is an old wave returning as something new. Ken wants to user in a new era with karate as the pre-eminent wellness practice.
